In the 1930s, a young socialite named Margarita Sames created the drink for her guests at her vacation home in Acapulco. She named the drink after herself, and it quickly became a popular cocktail among Mexico’s elite.

The margarita soon made its way across the border to the United States, where it became a favorite among Hollywood stars and other celebrities. In 1948, Dallas socialite Margarita Cansino - better known by her stage name, Rita Hayworth - hosted a party at her home and served margaritas to her guests. This helped to further popularize the drink, and by the 1950s, margaritas were a staple at bars and restaurants across the country.
